The best way to indicate future behavior / results is to look to former behavior / results. Identifying and effectively stating your previous accomplishments is critical to demonstrating your potential to produce future results and, therefore your value to potential employers. When thinking about how to structure your statements of accomplishments, consider using the “CAR” method. “CAR” stands for
C = Challenge or problem you solved
A = Action you took to meet or exceed the challenge
R = Results of your actions (preferably quantifiable positive impact)
However, when you write your statement of accomplishments on your résumé, and when you verbalize your statement in an interview, you want to begin by capturing the reader’s or listener’s attention by stating the end result first. Take a look at the example below.
C = Challenged to grow revenue despite a severe industry downturn.
A = Analyzed competition and determined key marketing strategies to implement price reductions and promotional discounts.
R = Increased revenue 5% Q1 2011 versus Q1 2010.
Below is the “CAR” statement reorganized with the end result listed first.
“Achieved 105% revenue (Q1 2011 versus Q1 2010), despite a severe industry downturn, by analyzing competition and implementing key marketing strategies through price reductions and promotional discounts.”
Highlighting the end result in bold. This will help the reader scanning your résumé to easily see your positive contribution to each of the organizations for which you worked.
